Education & Support - Consequences of mixing alcohol & medications


Type of Medication Effects when mixed with alcohol

ANTIPSYCHOTICS

(Mellaril, Haldol, Stelazine, Navane, Trilafon, Loxitane, Thorazine, Prolixin, etc.)

  • Decreases amount of medication due to increased urination
  • Increases sedating effects of alcohol
  • Increases the effects of the medication
  • Decreases muscle coordination & judgment
  • Decreases blood pressure - maybe serious to fatal!

ANTI-DEPRESSANTS

(Elavil, Sinequan, Amitriptyline, Desyrel, Norpramin, Tofranil, Triavil, etc.)

  • Increases symptoms of depression
  • Increases withdrawal symptoms from alcohol (anxiety, shakiness, etc.)
  • Decreases body temperature
  • Decreases muscle coordination and judgment
  • Increases CNS depression - may be fatal!

LITHIUM

(Lithium Carbonate, Lithium Citrate, Lithobid)

  • Decreases amount of Lithium in the blood - early symptoms that can start to happen after only 2-3 beer
  • If dehydration begins, Lithium toxicity (poisoning) may occur - can be fatal!

MINOR TRANQUILIZERS

(Ativan, Centrax, Diazepam, Librium, Valium, Vistaril, Tranxene, Xanax, etc)

  • Increases sedating/depressive effects
  • Cross tolerance with alcohol (increases possibility of addiction)
  • Possible serious fall in blood pressure - can be fatal!

SIDE-EFFECT MEDS

(Artane, Cogentine)

  • Increases "dryness" and hallucinations
  • Increases mental illness symptoms

BARBITUATES (Downers)

(Amytal, Butisol, Nebutal, Phenobarbitual, Seconal ("Red"))

QUAALUDES ("Mickey Finn")

  • Nausea (vomiting)
  • Slows breathing & heart rate - can be fatal!
  • Cross tolerance with alcohol (increases possibility of addiction)
  • Increases possibility of having a seizure
